About the Information Systems Department

The Information Systems (IS) Department is one of the largest academic programs at UMBC. There are over 1000 undergraduate majors, about 300 masters students, and over 40 doctoral students. The department has 28 full time and a diverse collection of part-time faculty to support the teaching needs for the IS student community. Seven staff members ensure the smooth functioning of the department's operations.

::: GAANN fellowships available - 9.3.2004
     
  The IS Department has a number of fellowships to offer as part of the GAANN
(Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need) program. The fellowships
offer an attractive stipend and health benefits, tuition, books and fees,
conference travel, and computers and other equipment for research. Domestic
(US citizens and permanent residents) students who are already in the PhD
program, and individuals applying to the PhD program in IS are encouraged to

::: The IS Department welcomes Drs. Chen and Koru - 9.3.2004
     
  Dr. Zhiyuan Chen joins the IS Department after completing his PhD at Cornell and a post-doc at Microsoft. Dr. Chen's research focuses on database systems. Dr. A. Gunes Koru completed his PhD at Southern Methodist University. Dr. Koru's research focuses on software engineering.
     
::: Dr. Hongfang Liu receives NSF grant - 9.3.2004
     
  Dr. Liu received over $800,000 to support research on online biomedical resources and the use of machine learning techniques to help the construction of natural language processing applications in the biomedical domain. Her collaborators on this grant are Dr. Wu at Georgetown University and Dr. Friedman at Columbia University.
     
::: Dr. Anita Komlodi invited to speak at EU Conference - 7.12.2004
     
  Dr. Komlodi has been invited to speak about how foreign-born scientists can maintain scientific connections with researchers in their home countries. She will talk about her experiences during an upcoming European Union conference (Enwise Valorization Conference, September 9-10, 2004) in Tallinn, Estonia. The primary theme of the conference is "Enlarging Europe with/for Women Scientists."
     
::: Dr. Sears receives a 2004 IBM Faculty Award - 6.21.2004
     
  Dr. Sears was selected to receive a 2004 IBM Faculty Award. This is a highly competitive award intended to recognize the quality of an individual's research program and its importance to IBM's industry. The accompanying $40,000 will be used to support research on accessibility, speech recognition, and mobile computing.
     
::: New E-government Certificate - 6.21.2004
     
  In response to the growing demand for electronic government education and training, the IS Department has partnered with the Department of Public Policy to offer a new graduate certificate in electronic government. This certificate, which is ideal for mid-career professionals with either a technical or management background, allows students to take courses that cover management, policy, and technology issues that complement their own experiences.
     
::: Drs. Komlodi, Lutters, and Ozok receive NSF Grant - 6.1.2004
     
  Drs. Komlodi, Lutters, and Ozok, working with Dr. Cotten (Sociology), Claudia Morrell (Center for Women in Information Technology), and Lee Boot (Imaging Research Center) received $500,000 from the National Science Foundation to support their research on differences in perceptions and use of IT among middle-school students and the impact of these differences on career choice.
