::: Congratulations to Gregory Johnson - 6.12.2004
     
  Gregory, an undergraduate IS major, was recently named the Burgee Regents
Scholar by the University System of Maryland. This award costs for in-state
tuition and fees, room and board costs, and includes a $500/semester stipend
for books and educational costs.
     
::: Dr. Seaman promoted to Associate Professor- 5.25.2004
     
  Effective July 1st, 2004, Dr. Carolyn Seaman will be promoted to Associate
Professor in the IS Department. Dr. Seaman joined the IS department in 1998.
In 2000, she received the CAREER grant from the National Science
Foundation which is considered the NSF's most prestigious award for new
faculty. Dr. Seaman is serving as the Program Co-chair for the Metrics 2005
conference.
     
::: GAANN Program Grant - 5.10.2004
     
  The Department of Information Systems has received over $600,000 from the U.S. Department of Education as part of the Graduate Assistantships in Areas of National Needs (GAANN) program. This award will provide financial support for domestic doctoral students (US citizens and permanent residents) in Information Systems at UMBC. The project is directed by Dr. Gangopadhyay and overseen by Drs. Ozok, Sears, Zhang, and Zhou.
     
::: Drs. Holden and Ozok receive TEDCO grant funding through the Real User Corporation - 5.10.2004
     
  Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr., today presented Real User Corporation $50,000 through the Maryland Technology Development Corporation’s (TEDCO) (www.MarylandTEDCO.org) Maryland Technology Transfer Fund (MTTF). The funding will support Real User’s work with the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), to integrate its security product, Passfaces ™, into UMBC’s operational network.  Drs. Holden and Ozok are Real User Corporation’s partners in securing the MTTF funding from TEDCO.  The MTTF funding will allow Real User to implement and demonstrate a pilot program on an academic network using its Passface ™ technology as the secondary means of authentication. Drs. Ozok and Holden will conduct research to collect and evaluate performance metrics; to make recommendations for improvements in the technology, its deployment and applicability to other networks and system; and to offer suggestions regarding commercialization plans. 
     
::: Research Experiences for Undergraduates - 4.1.2004
     
  A NSF-sponsored, Research Experiences for Undergraduates program, directed by Dr. Campbell, is preparing for its second year. This program provides financial support for undergraduates from around the country to spend a portion of the summer at UMBC working with IS faculty on research projects in the area of human-computer interaction. ::: Welcome Dr. Hongfang Liu
     
  The IS Department welcomes Dr. Hongfang Liu as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Liu joins us from Columbia University. Her research is in the area of Bioinformatics and Text Mining.
     
::: Valeri Scott Retires - 12.10.2003
     
  Valeri Scott is retiring after over 17 years with the IS Department at UMBC. Her contributions include teaching and advising countless undergraduates, serving on a variety of departmental and university committees, and serving on CWIT's Internal Advisory Board. The department recognized Valeri's contributions with a party on December 10th.
     
 
     
::: Drs. Sears and Zhou receive NSF Grant
     
  Drs. Sears and Zhou received over $400,000 to support speech recognition
research. This project explores the difficulties users experience finding
and correcting errors in documents created using speech recognition
technologies.
     
::: Dr. Campbell receives NSF Grant
     
  Dr. Campbell received $236,000 from NSF to support undergraduate research in the area of Human Computer Interaction at UMBC.
     
::: Information Systems Moves
     
  After 22 years in the Academic IV Building, the IS Department moved to the new ITE building at the end of June.
     
::: New graduate students
     
  The IS Department hosted orientations for new and continuing masters and
doctoral students. More than 50 new graduate students joined the
department's on-campus programs this semester. Numerous students also
started their studies in the department's online MS program this Fall.
     
::: Mr. John Schwartz Retires
     
  Mr. John Schwartz retired after over 20 years with the IS Department at UMBC. He served as our undergraduate program director for 15 years. The department will be recognizing John's contributions with a party on August 21st.
